Applications for Doctor of Philosophy in Mathematics for Fall 2023 - Admissions are Open From July 13 to August 14

Program Features

The School of Computer Science and Engineering (former Faculty of Information Technology) is one of the first four faculties established, at the Macau University of Science and Technology, in 2000. It offers a comprehensive suite of degrees: Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy in Science. Over the years, more than one thousand BScs and 700 MScs and PhDs have graduated.

In the World University Rankings 2023 by subject from Times Higher Education, M.U.S.T.’s Computer Science was ranked 101-125. And it was ranked 151-200 in the Shanghai Ranking’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2022.

Every year, students actively participate in various domestic and international competitions and have won awards. For example, in the "2022 National College Student Mathematical Modeling Competition" organized by the Higher Education Society, students received a second-class prize. In the "19th Huawei Cup National Graduate Mathematical Modeling Competition", they were awarded a first-class prize. In the "2022 Macau Network Security Technology Competition", they won the gold prize in the university category. The SCSE has established several research centers, including the Macao Centre for Mathematical Sciences, the Data Science Research Center, and the Macao Institute of Smart City. In addition, the school has multiple teaching and research laboratories, and new laboratories are under construction. These laboratories provide students with a good learning environment that combines theoretical knowledge with practical applications.

The doctoral program in mathematics aims to cultivate scientifically research-oriented and multidisciplinary professionals who possess a comprehensive mastery of fundamental mathematics or applied mathematics and related areas. Throughout their academic journey, students will actively engage in various scholarly activities, such as attending academic presentations to broaden their knowledge base. They will also conduct literature reviews and deliver topic reports in their chosen research direction, enabling them to gain insights into both international and domestic academic trends in their field. Additionally, students will receive training in thesis writing and the ability to effectively articulate their research findings.

Teaching Team

The program of PhD in mathematics is affiliated with the Macao Center for Mathematical Sciences (MCMS). The MCMS boasts a team of members with diverse and international educational backgrounds and academic experiences. These members have rich experience from renowned universities in the United States, Australia, France, Hong Kong, Macao, and mainland China. The center has successfully carried out various research projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation, Macau Science and Technology Development Fund, and others. It actively invites distinguished experts and professors from domestic and international institutions to visit the Macau University of Science and Technology, promoting academic exchanges and collaboration.

The research expertise of the MCMS covers a wide range of areas in pure mathematics, applied mathematics, and computational mathematics, among others. In particular, the center focuses on enhancing its existing research strengths, including areas such as harmonic and hypercomplex analysis, number theory and information security, probability and statistics, financial mathematics, matrix theory, operations research and control theory, numerical analysis and scientific computing, and fractals and dynamical systems. The center has achieved international recognition in several research fields related to analysis and its applications. It is dedicated to applying mathematics in areas such as signal and image processing, system identification and control theory, and the analysis of economic and biomedical data.

Potential Employment

The application of mathematical science in science and technology related to daily human life is extensive. There is a growing demand for mathematical talent in various industries, with broad prospects for development. Graduates with a mathematics specialization can not only engage in mathematical research and higher education but also work in other research fields or technological development sectors, particularly in information technology, finance and economics, and various engineering and computational areas.

Entry Requirements

The applicant should have a master's degree in mathematics or a related field and pass the entrance examination for postgraduate studies at the Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.).

Additionally, they should have obtained a score of 480 or above on the College English Test (CET) Level 4; 450 or above on the College English Test (CET) Level 6; a score of 79 or above on the TOEFL iBT; a score of 6.0 or above on the IELTS; or provide equivalent proof of English proficiency.
