Admissions: MUST Launches A New PhD Program in Latin American Studies

The University International College (UIC) of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) will introduce a new Doctor of Philosophy in Latin American Studies (DLAS) program in the Fall semester of the 2026/2027 academic year. Online applications are now open until July 20, 2026, and admissions will close once all places are filled.

Program Features / Faculty Strength

Macau University of Science and Technology is the only institution of higher education in Hong Kong and Macao to offer a Doctor of Philosophy in Latin American Studies. The University International College (UIC) boasts a diverse faculty team, with members from Macao, Mainland China, Brazil, Spain, Portugal, and the United States. Additionally, the UIC invites distinguished scholars from around the world in relevant fields to deliver lectures or seminars for students. The UIC also houses examination centers for the Spanish DELE and Brazilian Portuguese CELPE-BRAS, providing students with opportunities to study Spanish and Portuguese, thereby enhancing their academic research in the field of Latin American Studies.

Platform for Cultivation

Macau University of Science and Technology maintains extensive cooperative exchanges with numerous renowned institutions domestically and internationally, and has established in-depth partnerships, particularly with several top universities in Latin America. The UIC regularly invites external experts and scholars to teach, give lectures, or conduct seminars for students, broadening their knowledge horizons. Students enrolled in this program also have the opportunity to visit partner institutions for academic visits or language study. Furthermore, the University maintains close interactions with governmental bodies such as the "Forum for Economic and Trade Co-operation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries (Macao)" in Macao and the "China-Portuguese-speaking Countries Business and Trade Service Center" in Hengqin, providing students with volunteer service and internship employment opportunities.

The program focuses on providing students with in-depth academic training, equipping them with the ability to analyze and address complex issues in Latin America, particularly in areas such as economic development, political transformation, social change, technological advancement, and cultural exchange within the context of globalization. Furthermore, the program enhances students' teaching and academic leadership skills and develops their ability to utilize artificial intelligence in social science research. It aims to supply high-level talent for academia, government agencies, the technology sector, and multinational corporations.

Doctoral graduates in Latin American Studies have diverse and promising career paths. With the continuous deepening of China-Latin America relations, graduates can apply their expertise in the following areas:

1.  Enter universities or think tanks to engage in regional and country studies, providing academic support for policies related to Latin America.

2.  Join foreign affairs departments or diplomatic services, participating in the development of China-Latin America cooperation mechanisms and cultural exchanges.

3.  Work for multinational corporations, financial institutions, or consulting firms involved with Latin America, promoting economic and trade cooperation and project implementation.

4.  Participate in international organizations or non-governmental organizations (NGOs), fostering South-South cooperation on sustainable development issues.

Admission Requirements

1.    Applicants must hold a Master's degree;

2.    Applicants must submit proof of language proficiency as follows:

Ÿ   Applicants must provide proof of English language proficiency or proof of instruction in English if the applicant's undergraduate or master's program was conducted in English;

Ÿ   Applicants whose native language is not Chinese must provide an HSK certificate or other equivalent proof of Chinese language proficiency;

Ÿ   If an applicant's undergraduate or master's program was not in Spanish or Portuguese related fields, proof of language proficiency in Spanish or Portuguese must be provided, such as DELE certificate, EEE 4 or EEE 8 certificate (Test for Spanish Majors), CAPLE certificate or Celpe-Bras certificate. Applicants who are unable to provide the above-mentioned language proficiency certificates are required to, upon enrollment, complete supplementary Spanish/Portuguese language courses arranged by the University within their study period at their own expense.
