Course Description
Core Courses
Jurisprudence (3 Credits)
This course covers the fundamental theories of law, focusing on basic legal concepts, principles, and regulations.
Legal Methods and Case Studies (3 Credits)
This course aims to equip students with fundamental legal reasoning and case analysis skills. Students will learn to identify stakeholders and their interests in specific disputes, recognize legal relationships and rights, defenses, and related legal issues, locate and cite legal sources, interpret and apply laws, and critically analyze judicial decisions from both domestic and international contexts.
Comparative Judicial Systems (3 Credits)
This course provides a systematic introduction to the judicial systems of representative countries and regions within the civil law and common law traditions. It focuses on the structure of judicial organizations, the legal basis for judicial authority and its operation, and reflects on contemporary judicial systems and their reforms by tracing their historical roots and modern transformations.
Elective Courses
Selected Topics on Cross-border Legal Issues (2 Credits)
This course addresses jurisdictional issues, legal applicability, and judicial assistance in resolving civil and commercial disputes across the Taiwan Strait and in the Hong Kong and Macau regions. It emphasizes complex issues arising from legal conflicts between different jurisdictions.
Comparative Law (2 Credits)
This course covers the history and current status of comparative legal studies, focusing on methodologies such as functionalist comparative law and legal culture comparison. It examines the similarities and differences among major world legal systems in terms of legal culture, theory, and institutions.
Frontiers of law (2 Credits)
This course explores new fields, issues, and methodologies in legal studies, aiming to cultivate innovative and forward-thinking perspectives among students.
Law, Humanities and Social Science (2 Credits)
This course adopts an interdisciplinary approach to explore and research the intersections between law and fields such as history, literature, religion, economics, sociology, anthropology, and political science.
Dissertation and Other Core Courses
Reading Reports (3 Credits)
Students are required to complete at least three reading reports on legal literature, each consisting of no less than 5,000 words.
Academic Activities (3 Credits)
Students are required to participate in at least six academic activities organized by the faculty and submit a written report for each activity, with each report being no less than 2,000 words. Assessment is on a pass/not pass basis.
Annual Papers (2 Credits)
Students are required to complete one annual report, with each report being no less than 5,000 words.
Dissertation (12 Credits)
Students are required to complete a research dissertation which is no less than 50,000 words (Chinese) or 30,000 words (English) and pass the oral defense.
Degree Requirements
1.Students are required to complete 33 credits of study plan and pass the examination within the study period. (1)Students are required to complete all courses of the study plan, including core courses in Table 1 (9 credits), elective courses in Table 2 (4 credits), other core courses in Table 3 (8 credits) and dissertation in Table 4 (12 credits). (2)Students’ performances will be graded according to their course discussions, reports and exam marks. 2.During the study period, students must publish at least one paper in the approbatory academic journal. Then, they can attain the arrangement for oral defense. 3.Students are required to complete three Reading Reports, one Annual Paper, and at least six Academic Activities. 4.After confirming required courses, students can start writing the thesis proposal. Students can continue their dissertation research and writing upon completion of thesis proposal defense. 5.Students are required to complete a research dissertation which is no less than 50,000 words (Chinese) or 30,000 words (English) and pass the oral defense.
Learning Time
The duration for taking all courses is 18 months, and the duration for dissertation composition is 24 months.
Qualifications of Graduation
Upon approval from the Senate of the University, a Doctoral Degree will be conferred on a student when he or she has: ※ In case of any discrepancy, the Chinese version shall prevail. (1)Completed and met the requirements prescribed in the study plan of his or her program within the specific study period, and achieved a cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above (excluding dissertation); (2)Abided by the regulations of the University; (3)Cleared all fees and charges and returned all University’s property and equipment borrowed.
