The healthcare industry is an important part of the core competitiveness of our country and the Greater Bay Area (GBA). In line with the national health strategy, M.U.S.T., founded in 2000, has rapidly developed into a strong comprehensive university in Macau and positioned itself to cater to the needs of the healthcare industry in the GBA. M.U.S.T. has been offering high-quality education in health and medical sciences since the beginning by establishing the Faculty of Chinese Medicine (FC). The Faculty of Health Sciences was founded in 2008 and subsequently renamed the Faculty of Medicine (FMD) in 2019, while the School of Pharmacy (SP), established in 2016, was recently integrated into FMD. The FMD is internationally recognized and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (published by the World Federation for Medical Education and the Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research). FMD at M.U.S.T. is also a founding member of the World Portuguese-Speaking Countries Medical School Alliance.

Currently, we offer Macau’s only Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS), Bachelor of Food and Nutritional Sciences, Bachelor of Pharmacy, Master of Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees. In 2023, the FMD and FC have been amalgamated to establish the “Medical Sciences Division (MSD)” to facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and improve competitiveness.

The MSD offers comprehensive multi-disciplinary programs in the areas of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, and public health with close collaboration with the Faculty of Innovation Engineering (FIE). Research partners include two State Key Laboratories and the University Hospital. Thus FMD under MSD provides state-of-the-art research platforms to support biomedical education and scientific research and contribute to the strategic development of Big Health in Macau, the GBA, and China.

FMD’s strength is indicated by the number of programs that ranked in the Top 1% of Essential Science Indicators (ESI), including Molecular Biology and Genetics, Pharmacology and Toxicology, Clinical Medicine, Biology, and Biochemistry. In addition to the new Ph.D. Program in Biomedical Sciences, FMD offers postgraduate programs in Master of Nursing, Master of Public Health, and Doctor of Public Health. We are dedicated to our mission of training and leading scientists and medical practitioners in these fields.  We are well-positioned to fulfill this mission with state-of-the-art research platforms, such as genomics, bioinformatics metabolomics, proteomics, transcriptomics, and chemical and biomedical laboratory research. Recently, we established frontier research centers, such as the Precision Regenerative Medicine Center, Institute of AI Medicine, LIU's Innovation and Technology Center, etc.

In collaboration with renowned local and overseas biomedical and engineering scientists, the Faculty of Medicine will foster interdisciplinary research in the areas of Biomedical Imaging, Big Data and Biomedical Artificial Intelligence, 3D bioprinting, Biomaterials, medical robotics, augmented reality (AR)/virtual reality (VR) in medical therapy, etc. The Faculty of Medicine will offer personalized research training from molecules, cells, and disease models to preclinical, clinical, and translational research leading to entrepreneurship in these areas.

Teaching Team

The FMD has a strong faculty consisting of Chinese Academicians, National Science Fund Distinguished Young Scholars, Yangtze River Scholars, Global Highly Cited Scientists, and the top 2% of the world’s leading scientists, etc. Scientists in FMD have frequent exchanges and long-term collaborations with scientists and clinicians from Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Macau, and overseas experts from the United States, Portugal, Australia, Japan, Korea etc.
