Starting from the 2024/2025 Academic Year, the Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Faculty of Innovation Engineering at Macau University of Science and Technology (M.U.S.T.) will launch a new Ph.D. Program- Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science and Engineering. Training Platform
M.U.S.T. is home to the only National Field Research Station for Coastal Ecological Environment Observation and Research in Macao - the National Observation and Research Station of Coastal Ecological Environments (hereinafter referred to as "Macao Field Station").
The department currently has several platforms, including Key Laboratory on Digital Twinning of River Basins (a key laboratory jointly developed with the China Institute for Water Resources and Hydropower Research), Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Joint Laboratory (Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Joint Laboratory of Collaborative Innovation for Environmental Quality and Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Joint Laboratory for Contaminants Exposure and Health), Environmental Sciences Laboratory and Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Room.
In addition, under the funding scheme for Scientific Research Devices and Equipment of Higher Education Institutions from the Macao Science and Technology Development Fund (FDCT) and university-related research topics, the department is building an "Environmental Science and Engineering Laboratory."
Weather Station of Macao Field Station
The instruments and equipment from the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine, the State Key Laboratory of Lunar and Planetary Sciences, the HPC Center, and M.U.S.T. LIU’s Innovation and Technology Center are used as supplements. The above laboratories are all equipped with teaching and research functions, providing resources to meet the needs of talent cultivation.
Teaching Staff
There is a high-level international faculty team of 24 teachers with diverse disciplinary backgrounds and research capabilities led by President Joseph Hun Wei Lee. They are responsible for teaching and supervising students’ thesis, including 10 professors, 4 associate professors, and 10 assistant professors. There are 18 on-campus mentors and 6 off-campus mentors, among whom President Joseph Hun Wei LEE, Associate Professor Qingbin SONG, and Assistant Professor Kai ZHANG were selected for the World's Top 2% Scientists.

Program Objectives
Doctor of Philosophy in Environmental Science and Engineering emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, independent innovation, and practical coursework, including collaborative research with advanced fields such as Materials Science and Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, and Computing Mathematics and participation in research projects. The program aims to cultivate students' international perspectives and environmental ethics awareness and nurture them into comprehensive talents in the environmental science and engineering field that will be relied upon by industry, technology, and government in the future.

Admission Requirements
l Major in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Management, Ecology, Hydraulics and Hydrology, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Earth Science, Management Science, Computer Science, Engineering in Energy and Power Engineering or related fields.
l English Proficiency Requirements: CET-6 430 or above, IELTS 6.0 or above, or an equivalent English proficiency proof recognized by the University. The department will consider relaxing the English requirements if the applicant has published one English SCI paper as the first author or corresponding author.
