Published Time

In January 2026, Clarivate released the latest data from the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) database, showing that the Agricultural Sciences discipline of Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has entered the ESI global top 1% for the first time. Following Engineering, Computer Science, Pharmacology & Toxicology, Social Sciences (General), Clinical Medicine, Molecular Biology & Genetics, Biology & Biochemistry, Chemistry, Materials Science, and Environment/Ecology, this marks the 11th discipline of MUST to be ranked among the ESI global top 1%. It signifies that the university has joined the ranks of international high-level institutions in agricultural research, representing another major milestone in the expansion of MUST's discipline development.

ESI is a world-recognized authoritative tool for scientific research statistical analysis based on the Web of Science Core Collection. Covering 22 disciplines and more than 12,000 core academic journals worldwide, it is used to evaluate the international academic level and influence of universities, research institutions, and countries/regions. Only disciplines whose total citation frequency of papers published in the past decade ranks among the global top 1% can be included in the list. The breakthrough of the Agricultural Sciences discipline fully demonstrates that MUST's scientific research contributions, academic output, and international influence in this field have gained widespread recognition from the global academic community.

In recent years, MUST has been continuously optimizing its discipline layout. The interdisciplinary development of Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, Pharmacy, Environmental Science, and other disciplines has played a key supporting role in enabling Agricultural Sciences to enter the ESI global top 1%. Relevant research achievements are concentrated in sub-fields such as Food Science Technology, Chemistry Applied, and Nutrition Dietetics. The collaborative development between MUST's disciplines and research institutes has provided important technical support and talent reserves for the high-quality development and health industry upgrading of Macao and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Looking ahead, MUST will continue to strengthen interdisciplinary development, increase investment in scientific research and talent training, promote industry-university-research collaborative innovation, and expand international exchanges and cooperation. Giving full play to its own advantages, MUST will base itself in Macao, serve the Greater Bay Area, and face the whole country, actively contributing to addressing global agricultural challenges and promoting sustainable agricultural development.
